This thematic unit is loosely based on the the movie Monsters Inc. by Disney Enterprises, Inc. / Pixar Animation Studios. By using themes and ideas from this creative, engaging, and visually stimulating movie that most children are familiar with, students will learn subject content through a variety of creative endeavors. Choosing a theme that is fun and relatable to students will engage them in their learning of math, literacy, social studies, and science in artistic and creative ways. Creative exploration is highly important to student development and learning.
Having the ability to express their feelings and knowledge gives students the opportunity to explore new material and concepts. "The creative arts are our universal language--the language of our imagination, of musicians and dancer, painters and sculptors, storytellers, and poets. The creative arts are one of the most revealing of all human activities. They provide a pathway for people of all ages to reach into new unfoldings and understandings of themselves. (Edwards, iv)."
